Unlike today most of the land in the area was privately owned and was easily acquired for growth. This came at a cost to the innate beauty of the region. Luckily a group of caring citizens guided by noted artist Frederick Church formed the Free Niagara effort. This establishment was successful in convincing the general populace that Preservation of the area was in its best interest.
In 1885 the Niagara Reservation State Park, engaged by New York State, set out purchasing land from developers in an endeavor to slow the overpowering development in the region. The Canadians followed suit in the same year with the Queen Victoria Niagara Falls Park. Both organizations have been staggeringly successful at keeping up the area and cutting back exploitation so that new generations will be able to enjoy this natural wonder.
